Volunteers

Since 2007, more than 300 volunteers from 20+ countries have assisted in the sorting, stamping, packing and distributing of 300,000 books to over 100,000 children. Famous Jamaicans who have volunteered for our book distributions include World Champion Heavyweight boxer Lennox Lewis, Prime Minister The Honourable Andrew Holness and former Prime Minister The Most Honourable P.J. Patterson. The world’s fastest man World Champion Usain Bolt, American actor Anthony Anderson,  reggae Ambassadors Third World Band, “The Voice US” winner Tessane Chin and former “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard have all participated in fundraising events to raise money for the Books4Kids Jamaica program.

Former heavyweight World Boxing Champion Lennox Lewis was among the many volunteers who handed out books to more than 500 children at Montego Bay Infant School, St. James in 2010.

The Most Honourable P.J. Patterson, former Prime Minister of Jamaica

A highlight of the 2012 book distribution took place at Somerton All Age & Infant School, where former Prime Minister The Most Honourable P.J. Patterson joined the ranks of the charity’s volunteers. With an unprecedented 14 years in office, the presence of Jamaica’s longest ever serving Prime Minister helped bring much needed attention to the importance of Early Childhood Education handing out book bags to the children at his alma mater while rubbing shoulders with former Speaker of the House and Member of Parliament Ms. Violet Nielson.  The school has also nurtured reggae icon Jimmy Cliff through his childhood years.

“I will never forget that whatever I was able to eventually achieve, rested on the pillars of sound education which began right here at Somerton All Age & Infant School.”
